About the Author

Emily Morgan is an author-educator who knows how to connect with children both intellectually and emotionally. A former elementary and middle school teacher, she coauthors the series Picture-Perfect Science and the “Teaching Through Trade Books” column in Science and Children, NSTA’s elementary-level journal, and is the author of the Next Time You See series from NSTA Press.

The series “Next Time You See” has a delicate and delightful book about seashells that begins with a quotation from Rachel Carson, and features a two-person family photograph set at a beach shore where we see the backs of a barefoot father and his young daughter peering out at the water. Anyone who has ever been in a similar scene will remember the feeling of wonder that it evokes. The first few pages have a Note to Parents and Teachers from the author. She sets the scene and the mood of the book by reminding us that children are intrigued by the sight and touch of a shell. It opens up a world of magical imaginings about the beauty and secrets of nature. As Morgan writes, her idea is to “inspire a sense of wonder “about the remarkable creation of a shell. She has certainly succeeded with this lovely book. Not only is it educational, but it is calls to the reader and looker to discover more of what is pictured and discussed on the pages. Photographs and short biographies of the people who found the shells pictured are included in the text. The clear and varied colors of each shell speak for themselves as to their individuality—just like people. A website is given for further information along with definitions and clear explanations as to different shell types and mollusks. There are other shell activities listed in the book as well. The special treat this book provides is the desire to see and learn more about the hidden and enchanting commonality of nature’s objects which we often take for granted.
