CHERYL MACDONALD has been writing on historical topics for nearly 30 years. Her work has appeared in numerous magazines, including The Beaver and Maclean's, and she has written a number of books, mostly relating various aspects of southern Ontario history. Cheryl holds history degrees from the University of Waterloo and McMaster University and is currently pursuing graduate studies. A grandmother of two, she lives on a large rural property close to Lake Erie about 90 minutes west of Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Why does a cat sleep all day—or does it? This book is two stories in one. Read the book, and then flip it over and read it again. One view is the story of Luke, a young boy, who observes his cat Lucy lying in her favorite sunning place on the back of the couch. As Luke goes through his day, he thinks about his lazy cat. At school he learns about tigers and lions, and he reflects on the contrast between them and Lucy. After school he stops at the supermarket and observes a mess in the pet food section. Then he goes to the pet store to buy a collar for Lucy. He looks at toys but decides she is too lazy to play with them. Then Luke goes to the clothing store and notices a mess of socks on the floor. When he arrives home, he sees Lucy asleep in her usual spot and wonders how she can be so tired when she does nothing all day. Flip the book over and read Lucy’s story. As soon as Luke leaves the house, Lucy goes out to play. She chases squirrels in a tree. She sneaks into the supermarket and tears open a bag of cat food. Next, she visits the pet shop and chases the toy mouse that Luke had decided not to buy. Lucy then goes to the clothing store and plays in a basket of socks until she hears Luke’s voice. Then she hurries home and settles in her favorite sunny spot before Luke gets home. The book provides an amusing view of a cat’s life. The story is more effective if Luke’s view is read first.
