Nicola Hadfield's Beautiful Outdoors
‘How fair is a garden amid the trials and passions of existence.’ What wise comment from Benjamin Disraeli. Our deep African skies, abundant sunshine and balmy climate lure us outdoors for much longer than the time devoted to indoor pursuits. Spending time in our own gardens or outdoor areas should be a singularly pleasurable pastime. Nicola Hadfield realises that harmoniously designed spaces do not have ‘to be defined by four solid walls, and transforming the nooks and corners of a garden into places of beauty has moved way beyond the practical’. She has travelled the length and breadth of South Africa to showcase gardens of every description, from the grandest to the tiniest, from classical to contemporary, to inspire you to design your own outdoor space in which to create, to recreate, to rejuvenate, or simply to find peace. A follow-up to Nicola Hadfield’s Beautiful Homes, Nicola Hadfield’s Beautiful Outdoors is filled with gorgeous colour photographs, not just of the main gardens, verandahs and patios, but also the nuances and surprises, as well as some interiors because outside designs are often extensions of the interior, or vice versa!

About the Author

Well known for her style and flair in the interior design world, Nicola Hadfield continues to prove her unique flair for synthesising the best of the classical and the contemporary while remaining at the cutting edge of style with her originality and individuality. She continuously keeps her finger on the creative pulse by dividing her time between London, pastoral southwest France and her beautiful home in Cape Town. Nicola’s recent range of design-focused projects includes her first book Beautiful Homes of South Africa (2007), which immediately went into reprint and was a Publisher’s Choice selection, the television series Design Inspiration on the Home Channel, her consulting role in Johannesburg’s state-of-the-art Design Quarter, and creative marketing projects for prestigious clients such as Gallo Images and The South African Guild of Interior Designers (SAGID), now IID, whose corporate identity and commercial philosophy she has rebranded and strategised. Since single-handedly establishing the Decorex SA exhibitions, she has gone on to receive many local and international nominations and awards. Also in demand as a design commentator on new visionary developments in creative spheres, Nicola is sought after as a consultant and keynote speaker on design, entrepreneurial endeavours and women in business. Her latest business venture is an events and creative marketing company specialising in high-end corporate events.
