When the mounting tension of unemployment and poverty ravage a family during the winter of 1932 in Chicago, a father and son quarrel sends fifteen-year-old Josh Grondowski with his ten-year-old brother in tow out on the street to survive the cruelties of the Great Depression. What at first appears to be a windfall of adventure for Josh and Joey, quickly turns into the gruesome dangers of living the life of homeless tramps among the horde of other desperate men. Along the journey seeking work, food, and shelter, the brothers encounter near starvation, glimpses of hope that are dashed, and both the cruelty and kindness of total strangers. The author accurately captures the oppressive historical setting in this personal fictional account. At one of the lowest points in the boys’ journey, Lonnie, a kind and generous truck driver offers the pair a ride to New Orleans and also opens his heart to them. With their musical talents, Josh and Joey are able to find work in a circus, but when a fire destroys that venue, they again fall on terrible times. When the boys squabble and separate, it is Lonnie who ultimately brings them back together. The hardships that Josh encounters enlightens him about his relationship with the father who drove him away and leads the son back home for reconciliation. The book was originally published in 1986, but this new audio recording captures the breadth and depth of each character. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy; Ages 13 up.
