Given the huge demand for nurses, and an expected long-term shortage, this is a much-needed text on the ethics involved for this career in medicine. Students will learn not only about the different paths to becoming a nurse, such as the difference between registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, but also be given examples of situations where a nurse has to make a difficult decision. One example involves a not-uncommon scenario, where a nurse mixes up medications and has to decide whether to come forward. Chapters are labeled with titles that include "Integrity and Trustworthiness," "Justice and Fairness" and "Self-Discipline and Diligence." But woven throughout are anecdotes reflecting the different experiences a travel nurse, ER nurse or a student nurse. Sidebars include selections from the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses and material from the Character Counts Coalition. There are also brief biographies interwoven about Clara Barton, Florence Nightingale and Linda Anne Judson Richards, the first woman to graduate from nursing school in 1873. The one aspect that may raise eyebrows is the incorporation of quotes from religious figures such as Augustine of Hippo or Jesus Christ. But overall it is a worthwhile addition to a school or library, or for those looking for discussion points for the classroom about healthcare ethics.
