Description: This is a guide of essential topics of all the complexities found in a managed care environment. The readings include information on key concepts for complicated issues with which the healthcare industry is struggling. Theory is covered as well, and this allows the reader to use the information at the end of each chapter as discussion questions.
Purpose: The author opts to include both text and illustrations. The preface is clear and easily understood. The reader is readily engaged through the use of stimulating facts and examples that members of the healthcare team can identify with or have experienced themselves. This text is a wonderful addition to the current literature that is available. The fact that the author has taken many topics and put them together in one book is an added plus. The author's objectives are met.
Audience: Nurses in the managed care industry are targeted, but this book could be easily read by other allied health professionals practicing in managed care. It can also be utilized in academic settings for healthcare providers, administrators, and business students. I believe this text could also benefit anybody interested in managed care.
Features: The table of contents provides a nice overview of the reading topics. The material is grouped by subject, which allows the reader to easily access a particular reading. Assessment checklists are incorporated that allow readers to evaluate the concepts presented. A glossary of terms and definitions are included to allow the reader easy access.
