The sandcastle on the front of the book has three flags, which—according to the publisher's rating system—indicates this is for fluent young readers. Children not yet able to read this book alone should still enjoy listening to the story and learning octopus facts. The left pages of the book have vibrant photographs and octopus facts. The right-hand pages of the book contain a fictional story with cartoon illustrations. This has the potential to confuse young readers unfamiliar with the series who pick up the book on their own. However, a child with an established understanding of the series should have no such problem. It would probably be best if a child's first exposure to the series came from a teacher or other adult for this reason. A "fact or fiction" quiz and a glossary are included at the end of the book. There is also an option to read both texts straight through—without photographs or illustrations. Part of the "Fact & Fiction: Critter Chronicles" series.
