About the Author

Michael Bond began chronicling Paddington’s adventures in his first book, A Bear Called Paddington, published in 1958. Fortunately, bears don’t need much encouragement, and Paddington has since filled the pages of twelve further novels, a variety of picture books, and many other projects written for the young at heart.

This revised edition sports new cover art by Diane deGroat, some revisions of British spelling, and a more open look. The well-intentioned, but bumbling, bear continues to cause mayhem wherever he goes and whatever he tries. The family dentist may never be the same after Paddington loses a tooth; grumpy neighbor Mr. Curry's trousers are definitely the worse for wear after Paddington alters them; his work as a detective causes trouble in a nearby department store; and his career as a food critic is short-lived. As always, the Brown family, housekeeper Mrs. Bird, and friend Mr. Gruber are there to lend moral support and more. While parts of the each story are truly funny, the many British terms and situations may well be lost on American children. Astute readers may be able to pick up meaning from context, but certainly not all young readers will be able to do so. Fortnum's spare line drawings are full of humor and marvelously convey Paddington's feelings. 2003 (orig. 1970), Houghton Mifflin Company, Ages 8 to 10.
