Description: This book, the exocrine pancreatic cancer volume of the MD Anderson Solid Tumor Oncology Series, attempts to summarize the state-of-the-art information on epidemilogic, staging, current standard therapeutic, and future management aspects relevant to pancreatic cancer. It does so in 36 specialty chapters with an average length of 11 pages.
Purpose: The authors sought to provide the information necessary for clinicians to update their treatment algorithms, while also providing insight into novel therapies and areas of basic research under active investigation. These are most worthy objectives in a field where the disease-specific mortality remains second to none. The book does not hand out prescriptions for algorithmic therapy, but provides all necessary information to create algorithms in chapters of digestible size, a remarkable accomplishment.
Audience: The book is intended to be read by the clinician with a specialty interest in pancreatic cancer, and by individuals with research interests who seek to enhance their understanding of various translational aspects. The authors hence represent various specialty aspects and generally, with few exceptions, provide evidence of in-depth experience. Unique approaches to pancreatic cancer treatment, such as some European trials, are appropriately represented.
Features: Of the various aspects of pancreatic cancer covered in the book, the parts on molecular mechanisms and multimodality therapy appear to offer the most sturdy, complete information; the portion on emerging therapies with topics like animal models, special experimental treatment developments, and identification of novel targets for drug development are most intriguing. Unfortunately, many chapters, despite offering comprehensive text and informative tables, provide sparse (or no) illustrations, or figures are reproduced with marginal resolution.
Assessment: The book has already become a frequent reference source for me. To my knowledge, there is no similar work that succeeds as nicely in combining all relevant biologic, clinical, and investigational features of pancreatic cancer in a concise format. If you have a specialty interest in pancreatic cancer, and continue to feel challenged by this disease and its patients' needs, this book will be good for you.
