Amy Garro’s designs are fresh, crisp and make for a quilt full of impact! Your biggest decision will be deciding on which project to make first. If this doesn’t get you interested in paper piecing, I don’t know what will!

Refreshingly, this book does not urge you to be concerned with your colour choices, rather to test-drive them by laying your fabrics out and seeing what goes together. However, if that’s a little out of your comfort zone, then the fabrics used are all referenced so you will be able to source them. The quilts featured are all modern and colourful in design with detailed cutting instructions, and the blocks laid out in order. Suggestions are also given as to how you can quilt each piece. I liked the variety of bright colours with bold patterns, and found the addition of a more muted male-orientated quilt a good contrast to cover all areas of interest.

I just finished a paper-pieced quilt and I can appreciate the advantages of paper-piecing for accuracy. There are 13 quilt patterns with full-sized paper-piecing patterns in this book. Knowing all I learned about paper-piecing, Amy seems to have covered all the details you will need to know. It is also great that she has ordered the quilts in the book by degree of complexity. Therefore, if you are a novice paper-piece quilter, you can start at the beginning and work up to your comfort level.

The 13 quilts are foundation pieced with large blocks, usually 12" square. These are bold designs, a 64" square quilt has 160 diamonds, each 8" by 4 1/2". Foundation piecing gives sharp points to the stars, diamonds and overlapping triangles.
The introduction gives sound on paper, stitch size and threads. The fabric pieces are not cut to shape, they are squares and rectangles, perhaps wasteful but easier to prepare. The sewing directions are clear and easy to follow. The patterns are printed on two separate pull out sheets.
There are close up photos of the quilting. Each quilt has several possible quilt designs and suggestions for threads.

If you need to be schooled in the delights of paper piecing, this book's for you. Amy has excellent, detailed instructions on foundation paper piecing, including a rundown of needed and recommended supplies. We really loved her focus and and instruction on ombre (gradation from one color to another or from one value to another) in her projects, allowing us to achieve an effect that might otherwise be a little mystifying to figure out. Amy arranges the 13 projects in the book by level of difficulty, which is super handy. Cutting diagrams, quilting suggestions and her so-helpful tips make this a comprehensive, exciting book to gobble up and use!

Paper piecing is a quilting technique that uses a paper foundation as a guide for the placement of fabric and seams. This allows for irregular shapes, sharp angles, and precision piecing that would be difficult with traditional piecing techniques. In this collection of patterns, quilter Garro applies this traditional technique to modern quilting, using elements such as negative space, unusual block settings, and contemporary fabrics and color palettes. Many of the projects are beginner-friendly, and the repetitive nature of most of them, in which the same block is repeated multiple times, helps quilters new to the technique proceed toward mastery. The paper piecing tutorial is excellent, with full coverage of everything from supplies to best practices for fabric placement to minimize waste. Reproducible paper piecing foundations are included on a pullout sheet. VERDICT These paper-pieced quilt patterns will appeal to modern quilters who enjoy playing with color and negative space.
