About the Author

I grew up fishing the mountain streams and lakes of rural southwest Virginia, and upper state New York, almost before I could walk, with my grandfather and dad before our family moved to Newport Beach California in 1959. Blessed as a child, growing up in a loving family, I was ingrained with the best of both worlds – my rural roots providing a foundation in which to help deal with the ever changing trends of becoming a teenager living in a Sothern California beach town. My first job, at the age of nine, was working as a pinhead onboard a local sportboat, Westerner, running out of Davey’s Locker in Newport. I continued working the sportboats and fish through high school before attending Orange Coast College, majoring in film. Hollywood/ Time on the Water After college I worked my way up into the film and television industry. Eventually earning three national Cable ACE Awards for my productions with Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures and Showtime. Perfect Bait is currently under consideration at Lion’s Gate as a feature length motion picture. I earned my United States Coast Guard Operator’s license in 1978 and began running my own charter boat, a 48’ Hawthorne named Instinct. It was during my second ever charter as a licensed USCG Captain that we had a man go overboard in the middle of the night. What happened that night was the inspirational seed for Perfect Bait. The experience I gained as an owner/operator, fishing extensively from the tip of Baja to Alaska provided the personal experiences needed for the framework and background to write this first novel. After getting off the water, I created the Award Winning Fox Sports/ Inside Sportfishing television series. Since it’s creation the series has also earned an unprecedented nineteen Telly Awards. Inside Sportfishing is the longest running, highest rated fishing show in Fox Sports history and it’s allowed me to combine my favorite passions, fishing, filming and writing into a career that has been rewarding beyond words. In 1998, I purchased a 1966, 60’ Drake sportfisher and spent over six years refurbishing this classic sportfisher. At one point, during the rebuild, on the abyss of going bankrupt, I tried to donate the boat to the Boy Scouts of America. They refused to take her because she was in such disarray, forcing me to drain every dime I had into completing the job. It almost killed us. But today she’s worth every once of blood, sweat and tears we poured into her. Vintage has proudly been awarded, Best in Class several years running at Balboa Yacht Club’s Opening Day ceremonies. Everyone says write about what you know, and I did. Perfect Bait is a reflection of many years around boats, in shipyards, working the docks, and being on the water, not to mention having my heart broken on more than one occasion. The book is as much about love and passion , as it is about anything that happens at sea. I’ve lived in Laguna Beach since 1970, and still do today with my wonderful wife of seventeen years, Kimberly, and our golden retriever, Shammie. We have a little two-bedroom house, with no heating besides our fireplace. We’re nestled into a secluded three-acre, wooded lot, on a hillside in the middle of the canyon. We have to hike up the hill to see the ocean, but between living here and being onboard the boat at Catalina, there’s no other places on earth the three of us would rather spend our time.
