Children's Literature

Children are in for a treat in this latest printing of one of Keats' classic picture books. Archie and all of his friends from the neighborhood are excitedly gathering their pets for the local pet show. Archie is all ready to enter the stray cat that has followed him home, when he suddenly discovers his cat is missing. Archie and his friends Willie, Susie and Peter look everywhere for the cat, but it cannot be found before it is time to go to the pet show. Luckily, Archie is a quick-thinker, and at the final minutes, he comes up with a surprise last-minute pet to enter in the show—a blue ribbon winning germ in a jar. In a heartwarming conclusion, boy and cat finally reunite when an old woman brings Archie's cat to the pet show herself. The author's use of various paints and textiles give the vibrantly colored illustrations an almost three-dimensional effect. 2001 (orig. 1972), Viking, $15.99 and $6.99. Ages 4 to 8.
