He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and has turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first adult book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006. He illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008, and the follow-up book, Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes, in 2011. The cover shows the familiar cat dressed in a John Travolta white suit looking like he is straight out of “Saturday Night Fever.” The story is told in a catchy rhyme. Pete is happily dancing in his own way until a grumpy frog comes along and tells him he dances all wrong. Pete seeks out the advice of his friends, and each in turn shows Pete their moves. The mouse does the Cha-cha-cha. The duck does the Robot. The turtle shakes his tail. Nothing works until a wise owl explains that he just needs to be his groovy self. This is a story with a feel good message for young children. Pete’s dance moves are shown on the last page, step-by-step for the reader to try their groovy best.
