Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung

Piranhas are one type of predator that lives in the waters of the Amazon River. Learn basic information such as their physical features, diet, and life. The close-up, color photographs provide an opportunity to see this fish with its sparkly scales and sharp teeth. The snapshots fill the right side of the layout and the five lines of text appear on the left. There is one label that points out the fry, the baby piranhas. The small inserted maps of the world and South America show the area where piranhas live; the green color for land and blue for water are not easy to see. At the back of the book, readers will find a glossary with ten words, a list of additional books, and the FactHound internet site for links. This book in one of six in the "South American Animals" series which lists both content and reading consultants. Younger children may enjoy examining the pictures and having an adult read the text to them. Some students may need an introduction to the informational text features (i.e. table of contents, vocabulary, and index) along with less familiar syntax of the text. The book and the entire series may a welcomed addition to life science units. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung
