Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote

This nonfiction addition to the “From Trash to Treasures” series describes a number of ways to recycle plastic to make new things. A photograph of a rooster made from recycled plastic is featured on the cover. Plastic and its uses are described, and then readers are shown what happens when plastic is thrown away. A photograph of a factory shows how used plastic can be made into something new. Ideas are given about how to reuse old plastic, such as using plastic bottles as piggy banks or lanterns. Plastic containers can also make plant pots and gift baskets. Plastic bags can be knitted into new bags or parachutes for toys. There are step-by-step directions for making animals out of yogurt cup by using felt and other simple materials. The large photographs are colorful and helpful. There is a page with a recycling quiz, and a table of contents, glossary, index, and bibliographical references are included. This is a good beginning science reference for beginning readers. It would be a useful addition for schools and libraries. Reviewer: Vicki Foote; Ages 5 to 8.

School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Beginning readers will be inspired by the many examples of creative reuse in this well-produced series. Each book presents several ideas (button pictures, paper-bag puppets) that don't require detailed step-by-step instructions, and one slightly more complicated craft that does (yogurt-cup animals, juice-box boat). A diverse cast of children demonstrates the steps and models completed projects. Conversational, supportive text encourages readers to experiment with materials. Finished projects are not too perfect-looking, helping to manage expectations.
