Description: This pocket atlas provides definitions and black-and-white line drawings of more than 8,000 anatomical terms, organized into 22 chapters generally based on systems. The book is uniform in its coverage and accurate in its excellent line drawings that illustrate nearly all of the terms.
Purpose: The goal is to define and illustrate human anatomical terms defined by the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology.
Audience: The book is designed for anyone who works with anatomy: physicians, physical therapists, medical students, nurses, dentists, physician assistants, and other allied health professionals.
Features: Most of the concise definitions of the more than 8,000 terms are labeled in one of the more than 800 elegant, accurate black-and-white line drawings on the page opposite the definition. The book uses up-to-date nomenclature according to the Federative Committee on Anatomical Terminology and includes both an English and Latin subject index of terms, making finding a term and its illustration easy.
Assessment: This is an excellent source of accurate, concise definitions and illustrations. Its strength lies in the fact that for most of the terms there is a brief, concise definition with an illustration on the opposite page. A great deal of thought went into the layout and content of each page, maximizing the usefulness and minimizing readers' need to refer to illustrations on additional pages. Because of its systems approach to chapters and illustrations, the book should be an excellent addition to medical school curricula, many of which have switched to system-based educational modules rather than disciplines.
