Description: This handbook is a compendium of instructions for effective neurological examination in diagnosing and managing common neurological conditions for the medical student and the non-neurology resident.
Purpose: The purpose is to assist the physician or physician-in-training in recognizing neurologic disease in inpatient and outpatient arenas.
Audience: It has been my experience that the non-neurologist often finds neurologic conditions difficult to recognize and treat. This book is an attempt to make very complicated material more accessible.
Features: The handbook includes a chapter dedicated to the complexities of the neurological exam. The subject of localization is given several pages in this chapter. The second chapter includes common disease entities such as stroke and seizure. The last chapter provides the uninitiated with information on common neurologic urgencies and emergencies. Status epilepticus, coma, and neuromuscular disease are all mentioned.
Assessment: I believe this handbook does meet the author's objectives. He has created an easy-reference text on neurologic disease. The student and the non-neurologist will find this valuable both in the emergency department and on the medical floors. I commend his urgency/emergency chapter. The addition of temporal arteritis in this chapter is appreciated, as it is an often-overlooked neurological emergency. My one reservation lies in the relative paucity of localization techniques. This is the heart of understanding neurology and more should be added in a second edition.
