No one would be safe from these terrible creatures. A killer pig, walking whales, and a terror bird are just three of the extinct prehistoric predators featured in this work in the “If Extinct Beasts Came to Life” series. Readers meet a quetzalcoatlus, a flying reptile taller than a giraffe, with a thirty-six-foot wingspan, and a hyaenodon, who crushed animal skulls and was one of the first big carnivorous mammals. Each predator is shown in a scene from current times, proportional in size to humans or commonly recognized animals. The layout is engaging, presenting a couple of fact-filled paragraphs about the creatures, a silhouette of the animal alongside a human form, pronunciation, where each animal lived, their size, and a few splashes of interesting factual tidbits. Following the text are a timeline of when these giant creatures lived, an index and a brief explanation of how fossil skeletons are reconstructed.
