Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"With as much pep as a Sousa march, these titles delineate the hows and whys of U.S. government. Similar to Gareth Stevens's 'Know Your Government' (2009), the writing is direct and engaging. The illustrations are a compelling blend of historical photos, stock photos, and period sketches. Each image is captioned with information that supplements the text. Red and blue design elements and borders look crisp and lively against the white backgrounds. While each book stands by itself, as a whole, they emphasize the relationships between the government's many parts. All of the volumes are also available as interactive ebooks." --School Library Journal, Series Made Simple

Children's Literature - Marcie Flinchum Atkins

The President's job is a very complicated one. This nonfiction text explores the many jobs of the president. It is a good introduction to the executive branch, including who can become president, how they are elected, the oath of office, and impeachment. While this book focuses mainly on the executive branch's job, it does explain how the judicial and legislative branches relate and balance it out. How a bill can be introduced and finally approved by a president is touched on briefly. From foreign policy, to relief aid, to pardoning turkeys, interesting facts are presented as they relate to the president and his job. The text is informative, and is age appropriate for young readers who are reading independently. Photographs, of both earlier and modern day presidents, are included, with the heaviest emphasis on Barack Obama. One thing that is missing is a list of all of the presidents. A glossary, a recommended reading list, websites, and an index are part of the back matter. Recommended for classrooms and libraries. Reviewer: Marcie Flinchum Atkins
