Overview

In Preventing Violence in Relationships contributing authors take a developmental approach to examining violence prevention in intimate relationships and families. Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a guide for researchers, clinicians, educators, and other mental health professionals who are concerned with the prevention of violence in relationships at all developmental stages. The contributing authors summarize the current state of knowledge of interpersonal violence prevention. Theory, research, and practice as well as developing programs and policies are discussed in significant detail. Ultimately the goal is to improve the efficacy of current interventions and guide future pursuits of knowledge in this area. The objectives are fully met and in my opinion surpassed.
Audience: Clinicians and researchers in the field of mental health will find this book to be of considerable benefit. Given the nature of the topics discussed, this book is highly likely to be integrated across many disciplines. The contributing authors are knowledgeable, insightful, and write with considerable passion.
Features: This book contains 10 chapters which take the reader on a developmental exploration of the various types of violence which can occur throughout the lifespan. Sexual abuse, peer victimization, date-rape and violence, domestic violence, and elder abuse are topics every psychologist should read and be aware of. This book is comprehensive and yet easy-to-read and highly informative. The highlights of this book are the nature of the topics covered and the utility of this book to the field.
Assessment: This is one of the best additions to the field and a stand-alone, stand-out book. A relevant, timely, and definitely needed book which will benefit not only clinicians and researchers but those individuals upon whom violence has unfortunately befallen.
