Psychologist is a book in the series called "Careers with Character." There is an introduction by educational consultants followed by nine chapters filled with interesting case histories, practical information, tools for self-evaluation, characters traits desirable for a chosen career, sidebars, and lots more. Each chapter offers a different example of how an individual handled a work situation. The chapter on Job Requirements tells the story of Jennifer who was so terrified of birds that she could no longer go to work because her office building was located beside the city park where there were lots of pigeons. Jennifer went to see a psychologist and it was the psychologist's job to define and treat Jennifer's phobia of birds. He set up a behavior therapy program that helped Jennifer desensitize her fear of birds. In another chapter called Self-Discipline and Diligence, a young man named Dennis Gardner was studying to become a psychologist, but he often became frustrated at the amount of information he had to learn. He persisted at his studies, and when he did become a psychologist he was rewarded for his hard work and determination when he saw how his training benefited the many people he helped. The sidebars in this book are interesting because they are varied and easily read. One sidebar features the earnings a psychologist can expect to earn; another is Five Questions to Ask Everyday, and yet another is People Who Value Self-Discipline and Diligence. Author Brinkerhoff has done a nice job of explaining the requirements needed for choosing this career.
