It’s always difficult to describe how being sad feels, but this book in the “A+ Books: Know Your Emotions “series does a pretty good job of presenting situations that make us feel sad. Told in verse, Nichols includes watching a sad movie, a friend moving away, a closed swimming pool, losing an important basketball game, and other relatable scenarios. Large, colorful photographs and brief rhyming text allow this to be read alone or have it read to someone with equal ease and comprehension. It’s important for everyone to realize we all feel sad sometimes in our lives, and it’s okay as long as we don’t linger there unnecessarily. No one is too young or too old to feel sad, or any other emotion. Following the text are a brief Glossary, sources for further information about sadness, and a helpful Index. This will be useful for classroom settings, libraries, homes, camps, or just about anywhere children gather; or organizations that cater to children’s needs, emotions and development. Reviewer: Elizabeth Young; Ages 4 to 8.
