Salt of the Sea, Stories told by the Fishermen of Point Judith
The salt of the Sea is about men and a few women who are considered good ole boys that made their living on the sea. They were from Rhode Island and they fished out of Point Judith, Rhode Island. This port is called Galilee and it played a major role in New England’s fishing Industry.
These salts were around when the port was established back in the 1940’s and they are few and far between now. Cindy, the author is a daughter of one of those fishermen. She recognized these men were passing on and taking the stories with them so she wrote this book.
She recorded stories told by the fishermen who grew up and fished out of the port. They tell how they got into fishing and what it was like to fish on fifty-foot trawlers without radar, loran’s or radio communication. The way they tell their stories in their own words and voices brings to life what it meant to be working far beyond the horizon with only their skill, courage and a little luck to bring them safely home again.

About the Author

I grew up a fishermen’s daughter and spent many years around the docks of Point Judith, RI. My 3 brothers are also fishermen and I loved being around them on the water. The port of Galilee in Point Judith was unique; it was a community back in the 50’s through the 80’s. You knew everyone and they knew you. The older generation of fishermen, looked after the younger
ones, whether it was their relation or not. They mentored the next generation of fishermen so they didn’t make the same mistakes they did; they would teach them tricks or give them supplies to help them succeed. It was one large family and even being a girl, I was part of it.
I admired these fishermen and loved hearing their stories; when some of the most admired men began passing away I decided it was time to act. In 2006 I began recording stories, and went at it full time in June of 2010. With each character I was more amazed at what they wanted to share. In the end 28 men shared their recollections in their own voice and in their own unique way. Take a trip with these men and experience their love for the sea.
