ABDO's series, "The World of Martial Arts," explores fighting systems around the world as a high-interest topic for advanced middle readers and teens. The author makes it clear that samurai means warriors, not a form of martial art, though these fighters were masters of many martial techniques. While the cover design is gaudy, a look inside reveals that Ollhoff has presented in clear, readable prose a brief but informative account of the samurai's code of conduct (bushido), way of life, history, weapons, and even the gruesome ritual of seppuku (though not in detail). Beginning in 1185 and validated by their victory over invading Mongols in 1281, samurai became a powerful and highly respected warrior class in Japan. Martial arts fans will learn about a samurai's training in the arts of archery, horsemanship, and swordplay as well as their living quarters, food, and clothing. Readers may be surprised to know that these fierce fighters (who included a few women) also wrote poetry and enjoyed flower arranging and calligraphy. Though their dominance continued through the 1600s, the opening of Japan to the West in the nineteenth century eventually made the samurai obsolete. The text is well illustrated with reproductions of woodblock prints, some fascinating tinted nineteenth century photographs, modern photos of samurai re-enactors, and artifacts like armor and swords, both katana and wakizashi.
