Volcanoes are dangerous, as the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum can well attest. A team of workers trying to dig a tunnel stumbled upon the buried ruins of Pompeii; until 1599, they were just an old story. Early archaeologists were more treasure hunters than scientists; and, as a result, many of the beautiful artifacts from ancient times were stolen from the site. Giuseppe Fiorelli took copious notes regarding the findings of his team and deserves credit for his scientific approach. Beautiful ceramic walls and floors and plaster casts of the bodies of people buried under the ash can be seen. The artifacts and mosaics revealed what life was like in the city—from a humble bakery, to the elaborate baths, and to a large amphitheater that could hold twenty thousand and hosted gladiator fights and even a fast food service. The ruins of the House of the Gladiators was originally full of battle gear and illustrations that told the story of fights between men as well as fights against exotic animals. The story of city life unfolds in the text and then ends with the disaster that Mount Vesuvius caused. The author cautions that this is the most active and dangerous volcano in Europe and that more than six hundred thousand people live under its shadow. Difficult words are defined on the page where they are encountered and they are also recapped in a glossary. There are three challenges for students to encourage critical thinking. As with other books in the “Edge Books” series, there is a short bibliography, index, and websites managed through FactHound. The book is well written, interesting and filled with excellent illustrations. Readers with curiosity about the more exotic places in the world should have their appetites whetted with this account.
