This volume reprints issues from various arcs of Valentino's series from 1992 to 1993. An armored antihero resembling a cross between Batman and Hawkman, ShadowHawk adopts the role of judge, jury, and executioner. Seeking out muggers, he breaks their backs without regard to legal process or effects on the lives of those punished. ShadowHawk's "alter ego" as District Attorney Paul Johnstone is not revealed until several issues into the arc. Johnstone's half brother, Hojo, is killed by mobsters who subsequently also inject Paul with AIDS. Christina Reid, a former police officer, trains Paul to use the Hawk costume to battle criminals; ShadowHawk then teams up with various heroes, often attempting to find a cure for his disease.Verdict Valentino employs a style reminiscent of Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld, which will appeal to many but put off others. His limited abilities with dialog, plot, and characterization leave much to be desired, and detractors will note that the hero is a thinly disguised derivative of Batman, Punisher, and several others.
