One of the "A+: My First Picture Encyclopedia" series, this book introduces readers to a variety of community helpers. Occupations are organized by general role: Keeping People Safe (police, firefighters, EMTs); Keeping People Healthy (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dental personnel, veterinarians); Helping People Learn (teachers, librarians, school bus drivers, cafeteria and custodial staff); Serving People's Needs (farmers, construction and electric utility workers). Most occupations are introduced with a short (1-2 sentences) general description of the job, sometimes including a photograph of a person doing that job. One to two page spreads are then filled out with a somewhat idiosyncratic collection of profession-related terms (e.g., saliva ejector for dentists), with definitions and small photos. For the more challenging vocabulary, there are pronunciation guides (e.g., opthalmoscope). There are a few book titles offered for further reading, and as with all Capstone books, there is a link to a FactHound website with additional websites. This is an appropriate addition to school libraries needing illustrated materials on occupations. This book could also be used with second language learners to match words with pictures.
