Description: Clinical dermatologists will appreciate the practical information this book presents on treating darker skin types for a variety of disorders. The discussion of laser hair removal on Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI is one of the best I have come across. The explanation for using longer pulse durations, longer wavelengths, and increased cooling is better than what is found in laser texts. There are color photographs illustrating diseases, tables of differential diagnoses, and summaries of pros and cons for treatment options.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a practical clinical guide for dermatologists treating patients with darker pigmented skin.
Audience: The audience is clinical dermatologists.
Features: Some chapters address cultural beliefs in different ethnic groups that can impact treatment. Unique skin treatment considerations for a given ethnic group are discussed. There are several chapters on cosmetic treatment in darker skinned individuals. The diagrams for Botox injections and the accompanying text are equivalent to what one would read in a cosmetic only reference. The information is well organized and concisely presented.
Assessment: This is a useful guide to treating common skin disorders seen in patients with darker skin, such as melanoma, keloids, and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. There are helpful tips on how eczema and pityriasis rosea, for example, can present differently in darker skin. I found the book easy to read and predict it will be a handy reference to refresh one's neurons for diagnosing and treating skin disorders in darker pigmented individuals.
