Daisy and Sam, two young mice, wake up with delight on Christmas morning to fresh snow. While they are outside playing, they see something beautiful soaring on wings above them. Deciding it is a Christmas Angel, they are distressed to see it fall to the ground. The tired, hungry “angel,” a goose, asks for their help. They offer their Christmas presents of berries and nuts. After eating and sleeping, the “angel” thanks them and flies away, leaving them “armfuls” of its feathers to make a warm nest for them and their mother. The mice are certain that it was a magical Christmas complete with an angel. Chapman’s naturalistic double-page paintings depict a snowy landscape with stalks of dead plants here and there. The white goose is highlighted from the jacket throughout with glitter, adding to its elegance, as are the feathers and snow. It's really a hungry goose who has been blown off course in the storm; after the mice feed it and the exhausted bird rests a while, it thanks them and flies away, leaving an armful of feathers in its wake. The youngsters return home to show their mother the gift. "'Goose feathers!' she exclaimed. 'We'll feel as if we're sleeping on clouds!'"
