About the Author

Sharon Katz Cooper is a science educator and freelance writer who specializes in science and social studies topics. She has written more than 25 books for children, including a series called Horrible Habitats, which was recommended by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). She is based in Pittsburgh, Penn., where she lives with her husband and three boys, Reuven, Judah, and Yaron.

Joshua S. Brunet received his BS in Illustration from Indiana Wesleyan University and his MFA in Illustration from the Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford. He has been a freelance illustrator for almost 15 years and has worked for a variety of magazines, including Focus on the Family and LifeWay Press. His first children's book, When Pigs Fly, was published in 2011 by Borderstone Press. His most recent book, I'm in Love with a Big Blue Frog (Imagine Publishing), is a collaboration with the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul, and Mary, and singer/songwriter Les Braunstein. Josh is married with four children and currently resides in Denver, Colorado, where he teaches in the illustration department at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.

Follow the story of a fourth generation monarch butterfly as she migrates from the northeastern United States to Mexico. Migrating south in the fall, fourth generation monarch butterflies live up to nine months. When the weather is warm, the monarch gets energy by sipping on nectar with her straw-like tongue. When the weather gets cooler in the fall, she begins her long journey south. She joins hundreds of other monarchs who make the migration, stopping to rest and drink nectar. The monarch can face challenges along the way, including starvation, exhaustion, being eaten, and bad weather. She reaches Mexico two months later, settling on a tree for shelter. After mating in February, the monarch heads north to find milkweed to lay her eggs, and then she dies. A few days later, the egg becomes a caterpillar, a chrysalis, and then a butterfly. With large, color illustrations to support the story, this book is a charming tale about a monarch butterfly’s migration journey and life cycle that is appropriately written for young readers. Also included are fast facts about monarch butterflies, questions that promote critical thinking using the Common Core, glossary, resources for further exploration, and an index.
