Unknown to her, her Barron parents have been living outside the law in a relationship anathema to their society. By threatening the lives of her parents, the Council forces Kaya to leave home and enter the Shadow Academy, where she begins training as a Healer. But Kaya wants more out of life than to just heal her assigned Barron. She wants to learn to fight. However, finding an instructor who will train her violates Protocol and may result not only in her expulsion from the academy but also jeopardize the safety of her family and home. This new fantasy series contains strong character development and mythological world building. The Skilled and Unskilled peoples of Tril live separate and secret lives from each other. Skilled people are mostly divided into two classes: the Barrons (warriors who fight with katana swords) and Healers (subservient, nonfighting natural healers who are “bound” to Barrons). Kaya is a product from a forbidden marriage between two Barrons who left the oppressive rules (Protocol) and the long war between the Skilled Zettai Council and their enemy, King Darrek. King Darrek uses creatures called Graplars to wage war, especially targeting Healers because without them the Barrons are much easier to kill. After an attack by a Graplar in her village, her family’s hiding place is discovered and she is threatened with attending the Shadow Academy to fulfill her role as a Healer. Readers will instinctively engage with Kaya’s honorable character and unwillingness to be subjugated. Kaya rebels and refuses to accept her role as a helpless Healer and convinces the grouchy fight instructor, Darius, to train her in the art of combat. Even though Kaya is immediately “bound” to a rich golden boy Barron, Trayton, she also feels drawn somehow to Darius. Along with her new best friend and guard, Maddox, she gets trained and discovers why and how Graplars are entering the Shadow Academy. This first novel ends in a cliff-hanger, though it is not surprising. The strong teenage characters, romantic tension, friendships, and fast-paced action sequences will keep readers wanting more. Ages 12 to 18.
