The table of contents in this book about South Africa contains a key to the icons and symbols used throughout the book. A teacher would not have to work hard to create a lesson plan based on this book—or any in the entire "Major Nations in a Global World" series. Questions and projects are all available at the end of each chapter, and the closing pages contain plenty of references to online and book resources. The scope is quite broad, and the book can really only scratch the surface, especially in a non-homogenous country like South Africa. Perritano includes a section about history and the conflicts between the British white settlers and the black indigenous population as well as the Boers, who were also white, and took possession of land in the middle of South Africa. The system of apartheid is not ignored, nor are student protests and the efforts of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Although country refers to itself as the Rainbow Nation, it is the sense of family that really drives relationships between the different cultures and thus impacts economic policy. Local cuisine has been influenced by the various nations that have ruled South Africa, as well as the immigrants and the native populations. Dishes such as Bunny chow, babotie and biltong are depicted, but they do not truly represent the variety of foods available in South Africa. The discovery of diamonds and gold had a tremendous impact on the country and led to the British government taking an even stronger hand. However, as long as apartheid existed there were international sanctions on trade. Once the country changed politically, it also entered the global economy. However, there are still great disparities between rich and poor, which also tends to be between white (rich) and black (poor). Sports are one of the unifying elements in the country. Rugby, soccer, and cricket are examples of sports the people of South Africa love. While many of the photographs are reproduced in full color and are quite attractive, many pages have sepia or other-shaded colors, which can make it is difficult to see details, especially when text is superimposed. The books in this series provide easily digested information followed by text-related questions and suggestions for research projects that should require a significant expenditure of mental energy and time. Gr 6–8—Through a six-chapter format, this set offers readers largely positive overviews, covering history, family and social relationships, food, school and work, art and recreation, and major cities and regions. The history chapters are abbreviated, relegating important topics, such as Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, to one or two paragraphs. Content is standard fare for country books aimed at middle school readers, but the vocabulary is stilted and too advanced for the intended audience; students may be unfamiliar with words such as verdant and purloined. The photos that appear on every page appear to be stock images, and they are not well coordinated with the texts. There are no maps. VERDICT Readers are likely to find these titles difficult to read, and they don't improve on extant materials. At best, supplemental report choices.
