Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"The Categorical cats are back again, ready to explore animal classification in Brian P. Cleary's new series. Brief, but interesting discussion follows, moving the reader from page to page until they are asked to recall what they have learned. Brightly colored cartoons provide comic relief as they extend the story. An endnote indicates a website for additional activities and games. The presentation is so much fun that readers are unaware of how much they are actually learning as they study traits animals have in common and come to the understanding that they are classified because of these traits."—Library Media Connection

Children's Literature - Julia Beiker

Through comical characters and funny rhyme, young readers will learn facts about birds. For instance, birds have backbones so they are vertebrates, or they live in different types of terrain including the desert. Each page takes the reader to a more imaginative place where learning about birds can be outrageous and fun at the same time. The colorful illustrations depict both realistic and fantasy pictures that create entertainment, but it could require a little explanation to preschool age readers. A glossary for vocabulary words like predator or forearms would have been beneficial. Endpages inform the readers about more cool facts, which is a refreshing way to let them know to keep reading. It can also be used help with a simple report on birds or reference for a teacher to use for Venn diagram or other classroom mapping. This book is part of series "Animal Groups are Categorical."
