Spirits of Cape Hatteras Island: Pirates

Description of 5-volume series about the "Lighthouse Kids," Spirits of Cape Hatteras Island: Living in the shadow of the mighty Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, miles from the village, Ellie, Luke, and Blake exist in a world of spirits, mystical wolves, and stories told by their grandfather, the keeper of the lighthouse. In this five-volume series, the three children of the Jennette family travel back in time to discover the origin of their ancestors and the events that shaped the civilization of Cape Hatteras Island. Throughout the series, islanders live as they did when only an occasional mail boat kept them connected to the rest of the world—before a bridge linked the island to the mainland, before tourists flocked to the area during the summer season, and before the government became involved in managing the land. Isolated from others, they created a life of comfort and community, one that is long lost. In each subsequent volume, the Lighthouse Kids meet the people and experience the events that gradually transformed Cape Hatteras Island to the popular resort area it is today.

Volume 1: In Croatoan, with their wolves as protectors, the trio is transported back to the late 1500s to live with Manteo, the son of the chief of the Croatoan Indians. Taking part in the Native American way of life, they learn to hunt for food, participate in tribal ceremonies, and even take an adventurous trip to the mainland. Through Ellie, they learn to tap into their spiritual powers, which they retain in all their future exploits and adventures.

Volume 2: In Legacy and Lore, Ellie, Luke, and Blake continue their adventures on the island. Through the special powers gifted to them by the chief of the Croatoan Indians, the trio encounters the sea god Poseidon who introduces them to their underwater neighbors. Poseidon gives them three dolphins to help the kids explore the mighty Atlantic Ocean. Just as their wolves are land-based guardians, the dolphins protect the three from ocean predators and other dangers of the sea. On land, the kids discover an abandoned mansion where they find relics of pirates from long ago.

Volume 3: In Pirates, the children are transported back in time to meet their more colorful ancestors. They begin to take adventures away from the family compound, as their mobility is enhanced by majestic horses. Learning of an old mansion in the woods, they are awestruck when Grandpop takes them there. Frequent secret visits form a bond between the children and the mysteries held by the 250 year old dwelling. Ellie's power grows, as do the boys. Luke is introduced to Blackbeard, and uncovers a family secret! Community events bring the villages together to celebrate their collective history of Pirates, as the island begins to stir at the looming threat of WWII.

About the Author

Jeanette Gray Finnegan Jr., Torok is a tenth-generation islander whose childhood was spent on Cape Hatteras when it was totally independent of mainland amenities. Jeanette—Jaye to friends—graduated from East Carolina University with a double major in English and history, and she did extensive graduate work at Old Dominion University in photography. After thirty years teaching both English and Advanced Placement U.S. Government, the author came home, back to the island, to live.

Jaye and her husband own the Dolphin Den Restaurant in Avon, one of the villages, and both spend the off-season writing. The five books in this series have been in the works for at least ten years. Previously Jaye photographed and produced a calendar of the island, from one ferry to the other.

The island is changing, and multigenerational families are dwindling. These books recall those moments that made life solid and depict a proud and innovative people, living on the edge of the world.

The stories are events that actually took place while growing up here. We know our history, and we found enough evidence of it as children. We would like to share it with you. Enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of this strip of land you obviously feel connected to also. This is what it felt like to live a natural life, surrounded by family and friends, few strangers, and lots of excitement. Growing up island was a special privilege with some unusual memories.
