The book begins with a conversation between Skywalker and his sister, Princess Leia, as they discuss their relationship with their evil father, Darth Vader. This is the question that sparks Luke's book-length flashback into his life story. The novel begins with Luke's childhood on his uncle's moisture ranch on the planet Tatooine and follows Luke's adventures, first as a young boy interested in fast-flying skyhoppers and laser rifles, and then as a warrior and Rebel fighter.
