With weather words and definitions occasionally included in the text, the young reader can easily learn new vocabulary without noticing. Students will also find this style of text fun and eccentric in a positive way since comical questions and answers are provided in a way to engage the reader. Captions are also cleverly included in the photographs in order to give meaning or explanations without being too overwhelming. National Geographic Kids has compiled four of their books, Storms, Weather, Rocks and Minerals, and Volcanoes, into one anthology. Storms includes information on thunder and lightning, hail, tornadoes, sandstorms, blizzards, monsoons, and hurricanes. Weather gives beginning information about how the sun and clouds work together to make different kinds of weather. Rocks and Minerals tells of the three types of rock forms: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. The rock cycle and fossil formation are lightly explained. Volcanoes tells why volcanoes are most often found along the Pacific Rim, the differences between magma and lava, and how some islands are formed. Kids will be drawn to this book by the fantastic photographic illustrations, the captions, the quizzes, and especially, the content-related jokes. National Geographic books for children are useful in a primary classroom because they present the natural world to kids who may not have a chance to see it otherwise and give educators an attractive, informational text fitting to current educational standards. To engage kids outside the classroom, the book also has a QR code allowing kids to become a “National Geographic Super Reader” and earn prizes, play games, and take quizzes via smartphone; the same information is available at their website.
