About the Author

Steve Smallman has been illustrating children's books for 20 years and started writing for children 10 years ago. He is the winner of the 2009 Sheffield Children's Book award for his book 'Smelly Peter: The Great Pea Eater'.Bruno Merz attended the National School of Fine Arts in Caen, France. Alongside his previous experience in the multimedia market, he has completed numerous commissions for various different publishers. Bruno now works for the press and various publishing agencies in Leeds, U.K.

The weather monster smiles and the world smiles with him. When he cries the heaven's rain his tears. Part of the "Storytime" series, this book is a sweet, if predictable, fable of friendship and over-coming fears. A town is gloomy and sad because it rains every day. It rains every day because the weather monster is unhappy. The townspeople decide to give the weather monster a cake to cheer up and a small boy volunteers to deliver it. But facing a monster, even a weather monster, requires courage and resolve. When the boy actually meets the monster and delivers the cake, he learns that the monster is not so scary, he is simply lonely. They become friends and walk into town together. The morals—of making friends with strangers and facing your own fears—are not buried deep. There is even a "Next Steps" section at the back offering discussion questions about how the boy and monster became friends, and how it feels to be lonely and left out. For adults, the book is borderline preachy. But for small children have probably not heard similar stories quite as often, it is likely to be a fun, albeit still predictable, fantasy.
