Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sandra Eichelberger

Having a fun bike ride turns into a horrible mistake when Quentin and Reese take a new route through an unknown town where stray cats are on the attack. The boys are chased, scratched, and threatened by hissing and slashing cats in a town that seems to have almost no occupants. The only safe spot seems to be a pizza parlor and the woman who runs it may be the person who can save them from the cats. But the question is—will she save them or is there more to the town than just evil cats? Quentin and Reese worry that they may never get back home. The suspense builds and the story moves quickly. Unfortunately the ending is resolved in a note at the end of the book and not fully explored as part of the plot. This fast read should have appeal to elementary school students looking for an engaging read. The author has placed a glossary, discussion questions, and writing prompts at the end of the book and these should be useful to students writing or talking about the book. The illustrations by Nelson Evergreen add to the scary tone and amplify the plot. This is one of the “Jason Strange” series of children’s scary tales set in Ravens Pass. Reviewer: Sandra Eichelberger; Ages 8 to 12.
