Overview

Like many of the albums released in the U.S. by British artists in the 1960s, The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore/(Baby) You Don't Have to Tell Me was a haphazard assortment of tracks from various U.K. LPs, EPs, and singles. (Yes, the Walker Brothers were actually Americans, but they were based in Britain, which they made their primary market for sales and fan popularity.) This LP does include a few of their better songs -- the hit single "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore," "After the Lights Go Out," and "(Baby) You Don't Have to Tell Me," a hit in the U.K. but a non-charter in the States (though obviously Smash Records were hoping differently if they used the song title as part of the album title). But the rest of it contains some of their lesser recordings, most of which lean toward their more MOR or pedestrian soul-R&B-oriented sides. All but one of the cuts appear on the CD reissues of the three British Walker Brothers albums, which makes this LP of limited interest. Completists, however, might want it solely for that song that doesn't appear on those CDs, the soul cover "Don't Fight It," though Scott Walker isn't singing lead on that recording.
