This quality book features the vast number of shark species in context with other marine creatures. Harvey has organized the book using five categories. “Amazing Anatomy” includes information about sea creatures’ adaptations, from fins to camouflage, tusks to teeth, and sizes ranging from tiny pigmy sea horses to the giant whale shark. “Animal Athletes” features the best swimmers, fighters, surfers, and jumpers in the ocean. “Life Stories” discusses survival: the ocean is a tough place to live, hunt, and reproduce, and marine life must develop survival strategies by finding safety in large groups or developing a symbiotic relationship with a sea anemone. “Supernatural Senses” is about marine life with “super powers” such as Hammerhead sharks that pick up electrical signals, mantis shrimp that can detect light that other creatures cannot, or a broadclub cuttlefish’s brain power. For example: illustrations of the great white shark’s insides with its skeleton, electrical activity sensors, and powerful jaw; details about sea cucumbers’ quick regrowth of body organs; and a two-page spread about the Loggerhead sea turtle with pictures of its insides, hatchling photos, and “Stats and Facts” about how sand temperature determines each baby’s sex.
