Surviving Traumatic Grief Volume 1, When Loved Ones Die in a Disaster

This book is a practical guide to helping people affected by trauma. It is suitable for health professionals and people affected by traumatic grief.
All proceeds will go to Sue Evans Fund for Families, a charity set up to benefit the bereaved community. After distributing many thousands of these books to disaster affected regions, we will be setting up a healing centre to help people cope following disasters and to support struggling families to help reduce the incidence of postnatal depression.

The Sue Evans Fund for Families was set up following the devastating 2009 bushfires in Victoria, where 173 people lost their lives. This book was written to help meet the needs of people bereaved in traumatic circumstances; to address issues of grief specific to death in a disaster and is based on interviews with people bereaved in the bushfires, using their comments and descriptions, combined with input from experienced grief counsellors.

Earthquakes, floods and fire all leave those mourning loved ones in need of counselling and assistance, and this book has been written to assist the bereaved of any disaster. Each copy of the book sold allows four copies to be distributed for free to those in need. This has given much help and comfort to survivors of floods in Bangladesh, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, as well as to earthquake survivors in New Zealand.

“Born out of tragedy, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone who has experienced the sudden and unexpected death of a loved one. Drawn from the wisdom of those who have undertaken the challenging task of rebuilding their lives after the traumatic death of a partner or family member, this book skillfully integrates the voices of bereaved people with those of experienced bereavement practitioners. Surviving Traumatic Grief provides both clarity and practical advice for those undertaking this often long and challenging task of relearning the world. I highly recommend it!”

About the Author

The Sue Evans Fund for Families was set up following the devastating 2009 bushfires in Victoria, Australia, where 173 people lost their lives. Sisters do not come much closer than Sue Evans and Carolyn Westall. They shared their lives and their dreams. Their hearts were sufficiently full as to look to the needs of others. Sue tragically died in the Black Saturday bushfires, which were the worst in Australia’s history and have had a devastating impact across Victoria. Sue and Carolyn were going to start a charity together before the bushfires. To make their dream a reality, Carolyn has taken the baton alone and is following through on their planned dream with the Sue Evans Fund for Families. Carolyn said: “We would like to be able to help the community in this way, in memory of Sue and her beautiful family. Our first priority was to raise $25,000 for this book. Thanks to many generous donors we have achieved this. After the first volume, we realised there was a need for a book for families experiencing traumatic grief. Surviving Traumatic Grief Volume 2 For Families was published in 2012. All of the profits from these books will be used to set up a healing centre to help people through traumatic grief following disasters and to support struggling families to prevent postnatal depression.” Publishing both books in ebook format will hopefully bring them to a wider audience and help make the dream of creating a healing centre become reality.
