Susanna Barringer is the tween version of Andrea Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada. She has managed through her own cunning to land a job as a teen intern at Scene magazine, a fictionalized equivalent to People or Us Weekly. Rather than becoming the teen correspondent she imagined she would be, her biggest challenge is keeping up with the dietary needs of her uptight boss Nell Wickham and fetching beverages for the Scene editorial staff. She does not even get to take advantage of the magazine's tremendous designer closet because she is a size ten (more like twelve), and NOTHING comes in double digits in designer wear. However, Susanna is determined to get a good story, even if it means tailing George Clooney's look-a-likes through Manhattan or e-mailing her favorite TV star's former prom date. While the novel's premise is pure fluff and reminiscent of the many novels about fashion magazines and their crazed editors, Susanna herself is an original. Her not-so-perfect size and the not-so-perfect conclusion to her summer internship help this novel differentiate itself from the pack and make it and its upcoming sequel, Susanna Hits Hollywood, worth taking a look.
