About the Author

Susan B. Neuman is a professor and the chair of the Teaching and Learning department at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University specializing in early literacy development. Previously, she served on the faculty of the University of Michigan and before that as the US assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education. In her role as assistant secretary, Neuman established the Early Reading First program, developed the Early Childhood Educator Professional Development Program, and was responsible for all the activities in Title 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

This early reader introduces children are introduced to sea life in and around a coral reef. Readers learn that the water is warm and that the reefs grow large. Fish included are the clown fish, sergeant majors, minnows, and seahorses. Other animals include a green sea turtle, a giant moray eel, a whale shark, and cushion sea stars. Photographs in brilliant colors fill the pages with one-sentence of text on the top or bottom. A note to parents at the beginning of the book recommends using a vocabulary tree (appearing on the first page) to help children recognize words and concepts. It also recommends that adults go to the National Geographic website for more support and learning activities. A map of the world in the back of the book shows where coral reefs are located. A simple puzzle asks readers to identify animals that live near coral reefs. Most will know that the dog, the monkey and the bird do not belong in the picture.
