Currently, one out of one hundred kids is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, including Asperger's syndrome. In addition, other kids are diagnosed with a nonverbal learning disorder; they differ from neurotypical people in the way they process information and interact with others. Take Control of Asperger's Syndrome is designed as a self-help manual for teens with one of the two diagnoses. It describes what the terms mean and how the disorders can affect their lives, then provides tips for managing the unique challenges they face. There is a focus on self-advocacy (including a discussion on IEPs and bullying), using technology to help, hygiene and appearance, and friendships. At the end, teens are invited to fill out "mission logs" to help put what they have learned into practice. The book, simply organized, also includes real-life examples to help clarify points. The emphasis of the text is that there is nothing wrong with these teens and that they do not need to change—the authors are simply presenting strategies based on experience and surveys to help these teens navigate their unique challenges. Price is an educational advocate and parent of a teenager with nonverbal learning disorder. Fisher is an educational consultant with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's in special education from John Hopkins. There are some good resources presented in the book, as well as a list of resources and a bibliography. Overall, it is an interesting read and good tool for those who need it.
