Three different girls share a strong bond of enduring friendship as they come together to prove themselves, and to make their individual marks on Port City High School. Shane lands a leading role on the high school yearbook and newspaper scene; Marisa, a spot on the twirling team; and Brandi becomes a cheerleader. Each of them works hard to make every day at high school count, both inside and outside the classrooms. Book one, High School High, follows the three friends from day one of their freshman year as they each embark upon their high school careers with different struggles and triumphs. Bonds are challenged when issues arise in each novel, including: drug abuse, relationships, teen pregnancy, internet safety, and gang-related peer pressure. The girls manage to get through their freshman year in the first novel. Book two, Taken, presents another set of ordeals including the kidnapping of one of the friends. By book three, Deported, the author has done a good job of creating well-liked, relatable characters who struggle with the conflict each plot extends in a way that draws the reader in to the resolution. In book four, The Public Eye, readers can see how the author has planned the series well to set the stage for the next set of events. The author’s experience with teens is obvious, as the voice she channels for each character is authentic. This is a good purchase for a Hi-Lo collection with themes that are diverse, edgy, and gripping enough to satisfy even the most hesitant reader.
