Nine of Grimms’ folk tales are presented with illustrations by Herbert Leupin, a Swiss artist who lived between 1916 and 1999 and is best known for his graphic designs and commercial posters. Leupin created the illustrations for these tales between 1944 and 1949. Each is told in expanded form of between 14 and 16 pages in length, and all are profusely illustrated. Six full-page pictures and one large double-page painting accompany each story. The illustrations are unique. They are brightly colored and action-filled. Best of all, they contain a delightful combination of realism, fantasy, and humor. Readers may spend hours studying the pictures which are filled with myriad details, some expected and some unexpected. The book contains both well-known tales, such as “Hansel and Gretel” and “Snow White” and lesser-known tales, such as “Seven Little Kids” and “Mother Holly.” An afterword at the end, written by Sieglinde Geisel, provides information about Leupin’s life and insight into some of his artwork.
