Description: Part of the Tarascon Clinical Review series, this quick reference for the diagnosis and management of surgical diseases also addresses general topics such as management of nutrition and electrolytes.
Purpose: The author indicates that the book is designed to deliver facts and techniques the author feels are important in the practice of general surgery. It uses an outline format, with each section divided into a general overview of the disease process with gold standards for diagnosis and treatment. Given its logically organized format and its small size that makes it easy to slip into white coat pocket, this book achieves its purpose.
Audience: Although the author simply states that this book is intended to present facts and techniques that he has found useful in his practice without identifying a specific audience, it would be ideal for medical students on their clerkships and surgical residents at the start of their surgical careers.
Features: The book covers a wide range of general surgical topics. The information presented on the various disease processes is not limited to epidemiology/etiology, pathology, diagnostic labs/imaging/exam, and treatment and surgical technique. A good portion of the book describes abdominal disease processes of the proximal and distal gastrointestinal tract. The book also does a good job of describing treatment for trauma and burn patients in addition to briefly reviewing the diseases seen by surgical subspecialties including neurosurgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic, pediatric, and transplant. Tables for cancer staging and other diseases are appropriately used. There are no illustrations, which may be seen as a weakness, but the current format suits the purpose of presenting a good amount of quick reference facts in an easily accessible way that takes size into account. The index may be useful for looking up specific diseases, but the outline format of the chapters makes it easy to quickly locate needed information.
Assessment: This is a well-organized, quick reference covering a wide array of facts and techniques useful in the practice of general surgery. It is by no means comprehensive, but it is a perfect book for medical students on their clinical rotations or surgical residents in the clinic or on the wards.
