Description: The editors have gathered selected chapters from Family Medicine: Principles and Practice, 6th edition (Springer-Verlag, 2003), into a pocket-sized handbook of clinically relevant topics in cardiovascular disease that are frequently encountered by primary care clinicians.
Purpose: This is an effort to provide clinicians a pocket reference of cardiovascular diseases which can be readily accessible in a clinic setting as well as at the patient's bedside. Realizing the broad scope of the ever-changing field of cardiovascular diseases, the authors intend this book is to serve as a primer for frequently encountered morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular disease in the primary care setting.
Audience: The audience includes nurse practitioners and physician assistants, medical students, primary care physicians-in-training, and practicing primary care physicians.
Features: The book is divided into 11 chapters ranging from cardiovascular emergencies to risk factor management. There are excellent chapters covering hypertension, heart failure, and arrhythmias, as well as a chapter discussing the medical care of the surgical patient.
Assessment: The editors have succeeded in providing a reasonably complete, easy to read handbook that will be relevant to any primary care practice. This book could easily be considered an indispensable tool for the practicing primary care clinician caring for patients with cardiovascular problems.
