Each topic in this 2-volume encyclopedia is discussed as it relates to the education of African Americans. The entries provide a comprehensive overview of educational institutions at every level, from preschool through graduate and professional training, with special attention to historically and predominantly Black colleges and universities. The encyclopedia follows the struggle of African Americans to achieve equality in education—beginning among an enslaved population and evolving into the present—as the efforts of many remarkable individuals furthered this cause through court decisions and legislation.

A unique appendix, "The Complete Bibliography of the Journal of Negro Education, 1932-2008," includes listings of the tables of contents and reprinted articles on segregation, desegregation, and equality.

Edited by Lomotey (chancellor, Southern Univ. & A&M Coll.), this two-volume set provides a comprehensive overview of African American education, with a focus on historically black colleges and universities. An appendix includes the complete bibliography of The Journal of Negro Education from 1932 through 2008, along with articles from this journal on segregation, desegregation, and equality in education. Unfortunately, there is no listing or mention of these articles in the table of contents, which simply notes the inclusion of the bibliography. The list of entries is included in both volumes, although it lacks the articles from The Journal of Negro Education included in the appendix. Containing almost 250 entries signed by over 200 scholars and legal professionals, the set also contains in the first volume a reader's guide, which groups the entries into 16 categories, including alternative educational models, associations and organizations, curriculum, economics, gender, graduate and professional education, legal cases, and precollegiate education.
