Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote

The Boxcar children, Jessie, Henry, Benny, and Violet, all provide an abundant assortment of ideas for everything from creating a detective kit to playing games. This nonfiction chapter book begins with the chapter, “Super Sleuths,” that tells, among other things, how to make your own mustache as a disguise, how to crack codes, and how to make invisible ink. A chapter about outdoor adventures provides information about tents, songs, fishing, hiking, and lists fifteen uses for a bandana. A diagram helps to show how to build a sofa fort. There are tips concerning traveling such as how to pack a suitcase and how to take digital photographs. Several pages list simple English words in different languages. There is a chapter on activities for Halloween and another chapter with easy recipes. “Violet’s Workbag” contains directions for various crafts, “A Friend in Need” is about helping others, and the last chapter explains a variety of games. There is a table of contents and some small illustrations. This practical guide should be interesting to readers who enjoy the Boxcar Children books. Readers will find lots of information about fun things to do and create. This book would be a good addition to schools and libraries. Reviewer: Vicki Foote; Ages 7 up.
